Brothers and sisters:
Whoever is in Christ is a new creation:
the old things have passed away;
behold, new things have come.
And all this is from God,
who has reconciled us to himself through Christ
and given us the ministry of reconciliation,
namely, God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ,
not counting their trespasses against them
and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.
So we are ambassadors for Christ,
as if God were appealing through us.
We implore you on behalf of Christ,
be reconciled to God.
For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin,
so that we might become the righteousness of God in him. 2 Cor 5:17-21
Old things have passed away. Is that not something that we can find comfort in? Is that not one of the most amazing sentences that we can hear? It is truly amazing, if we can believe that our past has been forgiven, died, and is not in control of who we are. Now, if, as a society, we could only learn this together.
Just like everything in the past, we can learn from the story. That story, no matter how hard we want to go backwards, is already gone. We can not change anything that has happened before this very moment in time. I can not change anything of who I was before. I know that I have made mistakes in my past. I can not go back and correct any wrongs that I have done to anyone. I can do one thing… I can learn and forgive myself for anything that I have done in the past. I can also, try my hardest to see everyone as the new person that they are on a daily basis.
During the past week, I have had some major trials in my life. I have struggled with lots of things during the week, and I have confided in my wife and some really great friends about the whole thing. These confidential encounters have all led me to the same place, yesterday is over, and while you want to change everything you have done, you can only reflect and do your best to get better. Even the best fall down sometimes, but it is all in how you approach it and learn from it. My past, is just that, past.
Now, if only everyone could do the same thing. If we could all overcome the past transgressions of each other. I am learning to try to do this myself. I am trying to not hold onto those past grudges that I once did, see beyond everyone’s past, and see the things that they are becoming. Please don’t get me wrong, the past is important, and it is relevant, and there are things that people have done in the past that can be forgiven, yet not forgotten. We still have to be conscience of the past, but we do not have to shun those because of it. It is a very tough concept to learn, practice, and try to leave the past in the past.
